A GOOD DOMAIN NAME CREATES A POSITIVE IMPACT

What is there in a name? This question is widely asked among us. This is by and large correct for a human being.

But how far is it correct for a domain which is created with a definite purpose?  A name imparts the first impression and the relevance to a domain,  especially in this era of SEO.

A domain name is the first thing a visitor will see. A good name makes a positive and lasting impression whereas a bad name can send the visitor back.

Though the concept of exact match domain (EMD) is no longer in use, a keyword in domain name can help in SEO ranking.

HOW WILL A VISITOR TRACE YOUR DOMAIN OUT?

Whatever you write on your domain, is intended to be read by visitors but how would a visitor know what is written there in your domain?

How will he know that your content might serve his purpose? He will know this only when he visits your domain.

Now among millions of domains how will he trace your domain out?

For this he will resort to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, AOL or ask.com etc. These search engines work on some algorithms.

With different aspects of different domains based on a particular keyword they frame this algorithm. This algorithm creates a merit list of these domains called a SERP i.e. Search Engine Result Page.

A visitor starts viewing this SERP from the top. Usually a visitor gets his desired domain from the topmost few results.

Today who has much time to explore the contents of millions of domains found in a search? So finally to get the attention of the visitors, it is required that the domain be placed among the topmost few domains of this SERP.

With other factors like Backlinking, Domain authority, Page authority etc, a carefully selected domain name plays an important role in improving SEO ranking. So weightage should be given while selecting a domain name.

WHY A DOMAIN NAME IS IMPORTANT ?

A domain name may make or break the purpose of your business. Here are a few reasons why a domain name is so important:-

1.  It is the first impression of your business.

2.  It affects SEO, the basic requirement of placing your domain at the top of the

     SERP.

3.  It defines your brand.

Here are a few important factors of choosing a domain name:-

1.USE .COM AS DOMAIN NAME EXTENSION

As much as possible use .com as the extension because it gets preference among popular search engines. Approximately 43% of all domains have .com extensions.

The people of the US prefer the .com extension. However .org or .net are also good. You can use .in if you want to limit your business in India basically.  It is better to avoid the weird extensions like “.club”, “.space”, “.pizza” etc.

2.THE NAME SHOULD BE BRANDABLE OVER GENERIC

Brandable means catchy and unique that stands alone from others while a generic name is common and difficult to remember.

A domain name usually represents your company, your activities and what you stand for. People remember and share your company through the domain name.

3.THE SHORTER THE BETTER

Aim for 6 to 14 characters. A long name may establish some level of trust, but will not help in improving SEO ranking.

A research by DataGenetics.com, a blog by Nick Berry, shows that the most common name length is approximately 12 characters.

4.THE NAME SHOULD BE EASY TO TYPE

It should be easy to spell and hence easy to type because mistyping your domain name may end up the visitor reaching a different website.

5.EASY TO PRONOUNCE

It should be easy to pronounce so that it can be easily shared by visitors as words of mouth.

6.USE OF HYPHEN OR NUMBER SHOULD BE AVOIDED

Use of hyphens or numbers make the name difficult to pronounce.

7.BETTER TO USE NICHE KEYWORD IN NAME

As much as possible try to use niche keyword in name that reflects your website because the use of niche keywords helps in improving the SEO ranking.

But avoid stuffing keywords awkwardly into your domain. It may make the name generic.

8. THINK LONG TERM OVER SHORT TERM

Consider your domain as your life partner. You can not change your life partner too frequently. A domain name cannot be edited.

It is to be changed. But change of domain name will cost you dearly in terms of money, branding and SEO ranking

9.AVOID BEING INVOLVED IN ANY TRADEMARK RELATED

  ENTANGLEMENT

Check that your domain name or any part of it is not already trademarked because it may entangle you in some legal battles in the short or long run. Avoid this possibility. It may waste your money, time and mental energy.

10.IF NECESSARY USE DOMAIN NAME GENERATOR

To make things more easy take the help of some domain name    generator tools like:-

i) Wordoid

This tool helps you in recreating an acceptable name. It plugs in a word. Tries to create names  by placing this word at start, in middle or at the end.

ii) Lean Domain Search

WHERE TO BUY DOMAIN Name FROM

Once domain name is decided, it’s time to find a Domain registrar. Domain registrar is the company from whom you will purchase  the domain. Before finalising the registrar, you must keep in mind the following points:

  1. Domain Transfer policy:     The policy should not be too cumbersome.
  2. Pricing:     Some companies offer cheaper prices for 1st year. In 2nd year during renewal they would increase the rate. In some cases the domai register may lock you for a longer period.
  3. Expiration Policy:    The domain name requires to be renewed yearly. In case you forgot to renew it, it will expire and  someone else may buy it to utilise the brand value associated with the domain name. So buy it from a registrar who offers automatic domain renewal and a small grace period.
  4. Privacy Protection:    As the owner of the domain name you are supposed to furnish your personal details to the registrar. Proper privacy protection hides your personal information and keeps your identity secure.

Subdomains:  You need not register the subdomain separately.  But look for a registrar who makes adding subdomains easier.
